Sweet Cookie "Want You Back" 12" Single (1986 Checkpoint Records pressing)

Born and raised in Baltimore, Sweet Cookie is an obscure female rapper who was active in the 1980s. Cookie never became well-known nationally, although she managed to attract some attention in her home town and nearby Washington, D.C. Favoring a feminine, sexy image rather than a tough, combative image à la MC Lyte, Cookie looked more like an R&B singer than a rapper -- and in fact, her music did have a lot of R&B appeal. Comparable to Salt-N-Pepa and Whodini, Cookie demonstrated that rap could be melodic, commercial, and R&B-minded but still have an edge. It was around 1983 that Cookie met her mentor Irving S. Lee, Jr., a Baltimore-based producer/songwriter who wrote all of her material and brought her to the attention of the small Checkpoint label. In 1984, Checkpoint released Cookie's debut single, "Heartbreaker"; the record did OK locally, and Cookie became an opening act for major rappers like Run-D.M.C. and Whodini when they performed in Baltimore. Then, in 1987, Cookie signed with the Fantasy-distributed Danya Records, which was doing quite well with Doug E. Fresh at the time. "Mind Your Business," her first Danya single, became a small local hit, selling about 25,000 copies around Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Lee wrote and produced "Mind Your Business" as well as everything else on Cookie's debut album, Do You Wanna Dance, which Danya released in late 1987. The LP didn't do much outside of Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and Cookie never recorded a second album. (by Alex Henderson)
