Dangerous, released by Epic Records in 1991, marked a major turning point in Michael Jackson’s career. Instead, Jackson worked with collaborators including Teddy Riley, Bill Bottrell, and Bruce Swedien, giving the album a sharper, more contemporary sound rooted in new jack swing, pop, R&B, rock, gospel, and hip-hop influences.
The album’s production reflects the early 1990s shift toward harder rhythms, digital textures, and urban contemporary styles. Teddy Riley’s influence is especially clear in tracks such as “Jam,” “Remember the Time,” and “In the Closet,” where syncopated beats and layered keyboards give Jackson’s music a more streetwise edge. At the same time, songs like “Heal the World” and “Will You Be There” preserve Jackson’s taste for sweeping, emotionally direct ballads.
