I’ll Give You Something to Remember Me By... is a 1988 jazz trio album led by pianist John Hicks, recorded on March 12, 1987 at Studio 44 in Monster, the Netherlands, and released by Limetree Records. The session places Hicks with bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Idris Muhammad, a compact but deeply responsive rhythm section capable of moving from hard-swinging post-bop urgency to spacious ballad reflection.
The album’s program balances original material and jazz repertoire: “Hold It Down,” “Pas de Trois,” Thelonious Monk’s “Monk’s Mood,” Rodgers and Hart’s “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was,” Sonny Rollins’s “Airegin,” “My Foolish Heart,” Miles Davis’s “Blue in Green,” Walter Bishop Jr.’s “Coral Keys,” and, on CD and later editions, Tadd Dameron’s “Tadd’s Delight.” This mix gives the trio room to show Hicks’s range—as a lyrical interpreter, a propulsive modern bebop pianist, and a musician with a strong command of harmonic color.
What stands out is the trio’s clarity of conversation. Hicks’s playing is warm and direct, but never plain; his lines are agile, rhythmically alert, and often brightened by gospel-inflected voicings and blues feeling. Lundy provides a firm melodic center, while Muhammad’s drumming adds buoyancy and lift without crowding the piano. Together, they make the standards feel freshly animated and give the less familiar pieces an assured, lived-in quality.
