The album draws from sessions recorded in 1953 and 1954, including material taped at WOR Studios in New York and Rudy Van Gelder’s Hackensack, New Jersey studio. The original Blue Note LP, cataloged as BLP 1505, gathered tracks first associated with Johnson’s earlier 10-inch releases, then repackaged them for the 12-inch LP era. The 2022 Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series edition presents the music on 180-gram vinyl and is described by retailers as an all-analog release mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes.
