Rest in Blue is a posthumous studio album by Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty, released in 2021. Arriving a decade after Rafferty’s death in 2011, the album serves as a carefully assembled final chapter in a career best known for the melodic sophistication of “Baker Street,” “Right Down the Line,” and Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle with You.” Rather than feeling like a collection of leftovers, Rest in Blue presents itself as a reflective, personal, and often moving portrait of an artist still engaged with songwriting, memory, and musical tradition near the end of his life.
Rafferty began working on material for a new album around 2006, but the project remained unfinished when he died. His daughter, Martha Rafferty, later took on the task of completing the recordings, drawing from late-period sessions as well as demos that reportedly reached back several decades. Her approach was notably restrained: she stripped away excess layers from some of the recordings to keep the focus on Rafferty’s voice, acoustic textures, and the emotional clarity of the songs. The result is intimate rather than grandiose, shaped less as a commercial comeback than as a respectful act of preservation.
