Bird and Diz is a compact but historically rich studio album pairing alto saxophonist Charlie Parker, nicknamed “Bird,” with trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, two of the defining architects of bebop. Recorded primarily in New York City on June 6, 1950, and later issued in the early 1950s, the album captures a mature moment in the Parker–Gillespie partnership: fast, compressed, harmonically daring, and full of conversational interplay.
This 1952 collection is one of bebop’s key artefacts and also represents two milestones: the only time that pianist Thelonious Monk recorded with the dynamic duo, and the last time Gillespie and Parker appeared together in the studio. It also features the red-hot rhythm section of bassist Curly Stewart and drummer Buddy Rich.
