Hairway to Steven is the fourth studio album by American experimental rock band Butthole Surfers, released in April 1988. Issued during the band’s late-1980s underground peak, the album arrived after Locust Abortion Technician and stands as a bridge between the group’s abrasive psychedelic noise roots and the slightly more approachable material they would explore in the 1990s.
The record is chaotic, surreal, and deliberately disorienting, mixing noise rock, experimental rock, psychedelic textures, warped vocals, tape manipulation, and sudden shifts in mood. Compared with some of the band’s earlier releases, it makes more noticeable use of acoustic guitar, giving parts of the album an eerie folk-punk or acid-fried campfire quality without softening its confrontational edge.
