Blood Orange "Coastal Grooves" Vinyl, LP, Album, Repress (2011 Domino Recording Co. pressing)
"Coastal Grooves" is the debut studio album by Blood Orange, the musical project of British singer-songwriter and producer Devonté Hynes. Released on August 8, 2011, through Domino Recording Company, this album marked Hynes' transition from his previous work as Lightspeed Champion into a new artistic identity that would come to define much of the 2010s alternative R&B and indie pop sound.
After moving to New York City, Hynes began experimenting with a blend of R&B, post-punk, and electronic influences, channeling the city’s vibrant energy and underground culture. "Coastal Grooves" reflects this with its sultry, nocturnal soundscapes, slinky guitar riffs, and emotionally charged lyrics. The album draws inspiration from glamorous yet gritty images of New York’s nightlife, as well as the city’s history of transgender and drag performance artists, which Hynes has cited as a significant influence.
