Various Artists "Music That Inspired Buena Vista Social Club" Import, Vinyl 2-LP-Set Compilation, Stereo, Gatefold (2015 Not Now Music pressing)

Our first disc samples the ‘real thing’ by going back in time to some of the protagonists’ original recordings. First up is pianist Rubén González, who played with blind bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez and would be the focus of Cooder’s second Cuban-themed album. Astoundingly he didn’t even own a piano at the time of his rediscovery, but we find him in good form here with the Orquesta America in recordings dating from 1956. Our second disc showcases Cuban musicians who broke out a couple of generations earlier. The fact that a Caribbean island half the size of the United Kingdom and less than half its population has had such an impact on the global scene is down to characters like Peréz Prado, Celia Cruz and Machito. All were active in the postwar era, and all have written their names in the island’s musical hall of fame. . Buena Vista translates as ‘Beautiful View’ – this is beautiful listening in any language!
